Our "expect the unexpected" theme continues into 2021, given the events in Washington DC last week. Despite the disturbing and tragic outcome, we hope that it's the catalyst needed to narrow the country's divide. Add to the mix COVID and the increase in cases from the holidays. Fortunately, there is a light at the end of the tunnel with the vaccination and the speed at which Connecticut is administering the shots.
Although the new year is on track to be equally as memorable as 2020, we feel lucky to have hockey in our lives. The great Nelson Mandela said, "Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport creates hope."
On and off the ice, we see the magnitude of Mandela's quote. Our players and are a part of something powerful, a team. Being part of a team is a significant unifier that has so many positive impacts on our players: leadership, fitness, teamwork, sportsmanship, self-reliance, achievement, and self-confidence. The rink time allows our girls to feel a sense of freedom, empowerment, and normalcy.
We continue to be optimistic and prepare to return to the ice on January 19th until we hear otherwise from Governor Lamont. We believe it's essential to have hope as it reduces stress, makes us happy, and keeps us motivated!
Another bright spot is seeing the larger community support the Hockey Helps the Hungry Virtual Food Drive. Despite the communication limitations created by COVID, 50+ teams, families, and individuals made donations, raising over $2,800 to date and bringing us more than halfway to the goal of $5,000!

As we all know, the Connecticut Food Bank's mission is critical, especially given the COVID impact. The demand for their food and services is up 44%; many seek help for the first time. The Food Bank has added a mobile pantry service to help with their growing numbers, delivering fresh and non-perishable groceries to 40 sites each month.

The virtual food drive runs through the end of January. Don't forget to indicate your team/organization when you donate, as there is a shirt giveaway to the group that gives the most!
